While there have been celebrity editions of Big Brother in the UK for quite some time, there hasn’t been one on the U.S. edition at all. Fans of the series have been asking for one since the show began as a summer replacement series in 2000, but until now their requests have gone unanswered.
Host Julie Chen made the announcement yesterday that CBS is planning on airing a special celebrity winter edition of the series. The show will not be counted as their 20th season, even though it will be the 20th edition of the show. Next summer of course will have the series return for that. The special winter edition though will feature multiple episodes per week, and will include all the same features of the regular program, including Head of Household, Power of Veto competitions and live evictions. Julie Chen will be hosting it as well.
In a released statement executive producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan stated that “Big Brother has been dominating pop culture throughout its 19 seasons, and it is exciting to grow the franchise with the first-ever celebrity edition in the U.S.. Celebrities will be under the watchful eye of the Big Brother cameras, facing the classic game elements, and of course new twists in this special winter event.”
While no cast members have yet been announced, there is sure to be a lot of speculation as to who they will be. If this proves to be successful, who knows, perhaps we will finally get that celebrity edition of Survivor next.
