On paper it might look like the Toronto International Film Festival is all about the movies, and with 255 of them playing over the course of the 10 day festival one could make a pretty good case that they are the spotlight of the event. But as we all know, we can see movies whenever we like, and the real draw of the festival are the celebrities starring in those movies. Thanks to the list released yesterday, we know that TIFF 2017 is looking to be as star studded of an event as there ever has been.
If you missed Drake at his annual OVO Fest a couple of weeks back, you’ll get another chance to see him when he brings his Vince Carter documentary, The Carter Effect, to the festival. He is of course bringing the former Toronto Raptor with him as well. And in case you are wondering, Drake produced the documentary. Other stars you can expect to see this year include George Clooney, who brings his new film Suburbicon to TIFF, along with its star Matt Damon. Damon will also be in town for Downsizing. Jennifer Lawrence will be promoting her film Mother!, directed by her boyfriend Darren Aronofsky. And Brie Larson will be bringing Unicorn Store to the festival, which just happens to be her directorial debut.
While seeing Nicole Kidman and Jessica Chastain walk the red carpet this year will be special, they’ve been here before in recent years. Jim Carrey on the other hand never has been. The Toronto born comic will attend to walk the carpet for the documentary Jim Andy: the Great Beyond, which is the story of Carrey and Andy Kaufman.
Other stars confirmed to attend this year include Margot Robbie, Shia LaBeouf, Kevin Hart, Andrew Garfield, Alicia Vikander, Kate Winslet, Idris Elba, Kristen Wiig, Daniel Craig, Liam Neeson, Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams and Christian Bale. Of course fans may line up to see Benedict Cumberbatch, who famously signed autographs for hours a couple of years back.
Emma Stone may be one of the biggest draws this year though. She was in town last year as well for La La Land, and this year’s feature, Battle of the Sexes, is drawing similar buzz. Her co-star in the film, Steve Carell will be joining her.
TIFF also announced that Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren and Javier Bardem would be taking part in their In Conversation With… series that has the stars sit on stage and be interviewed live before the audience. Audience members can even ask questions afterwards.
The 42nd Toronto International Film Festival runs from Sept. 7 to 17.
