Oops, she might just do it again. 35-year old pop superstar Britney Spears is apparently in discussions to perform at the halftime show of Super Bowl LII next year, and this time as the headliner.
Spears first appeared on the Superbowl halftime show in 2001, as part of a group that included Aerosmith, ‘N Sync, Mary J. Blige and Nelly. She was part of the group of performers who joined the stage with Aerosmith for their hit song Walk This Way. Shockingly that was the last time she graced that particular venue, but she has made in clear over the last year that it is one of her dreams to perform at the Super Bowl again. But really the questions everyone should be asking is, should she?
Spears definitely has her greatest hits going for her, and thanks to her acclaimed Las Vegas residency she’s made herself relevant once again. Unfortunately her latest body of work hasn’t been making too much of a splash. Her 2016 album Glory was generally well received by critics, and while Britney called it one of her favorite albums in her catalog, it failed to reach the heights of her earlier albums work. Her 2013 album Britney Jean was her lowest selling album of her career, and received mixed reviews from fans and critics. Perhaps as a straight on nostalgia act, Spears hosting the Superbowl halftime show in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on February 4 would work, but there are certainly artists who would receive more attention. There is talk though that if she does perform, she would once again team up with other artists for the slot, which would make it a more attractive performance to watch.
And in case you are wondering, if Spears does return, she wouldn’t be the first to do so. Gloria Estefan took the stage 3 times in the 90’s, Justin Timberlake has been there twice as has Nelly, Bruno Mars and Beyonce.
